But even that won’t guarantee any takers for those top notch apartments. Still, the chances are good enough to give it a try if you’re a fan of these lovely birds. Mount your bird mansion – or low cost condo – in an open area so the birds can swoop in and out unimpeded. If you live near water, even better. These big swallows prefer real estate within easy reach of the swarms of insects above lakes and rivers. If your neighbor has martins, you might be able to tempt the birds to your yard for crushed eggshells, a favored source of minerals. Wash empty shells, bake on low heat for an hour to kill bacteria, and crumble them on to your lawn.
